James M. Schulte brings a wealth of know-how and experience. His accomplishments in real estate, taxation and finance have shown a consistent pattern of contributing to the bottom line through unique and innovative solutions to business opportunities.
During his career started as an auditor, Jim quickly moved into the tax department of Maytag Corporation, where he served as Manager of International Taxation. Beyond compliance and audits for a multi-national business with operations in 29 countries, Jim was charged with tax planning to lower the corporation’s effective tax rate. These efforts resulted in the development and implementation of several separate international reorganizations.
He held a similar role in the international tax consulting practice of Ernst & Young before becoming Director of Tax and, subsequently, Vice President/Treasurer at Figgie International, a multi-national Fortune 500 corporation. While at Figgie, Schulte was integral in the development of Virginia Center (400 acres) just north of Richmond as well as Chagrin Highlands (630 acres) in the southeast suburbs of Cleveland. After negotiating the sale of dozens of business units and applying the proceeds to eliminating $750 million of debt, Schulte secured new credit facilities for Figgie.
Schulte then assumed the duties of Vice President and Treasurer at Dairy Mart Convenience Stores, Inc; a publicly traded company with operations in the U.S. and abroad. His impact was immediately felt through millions of dollars in tax savings and tax refunds that were generated through favorable structuring of an M&A transaction that involved one-third of the company’s revenues and several tax planning opportunities. Dairy Mart operated over 900 stores in 11 states and Jim’s contributions in maintaining and securing these retail locations was invaluable.
Jim subsequently established his own Certified Public Accounting practice. The firm’s focus is closely held business and their owners and the clientele range from manufacturers to retailers with a strong focus on construction and real estate related activities. While the CPA firm services customers in over 20 states, the majority of the clientele is concentrated in Florida and Ohio.
Jim is a graduate of The University of Akron with undergraduate degrees in Accounting and Criminal Justice and a Master of Science in Taxation. As an undergraduate, Jim served as President of his fraternity, President of the Inter-fraternity Council and Senior Class Treasurer. He was chosen by The University of Akron as Outstanding Senior Man and Outstanding Greek Man.
Jim’s community service began in the Ohio Army National Guard, where he served as a Military Policeman for six years. He has served on condominium association boards, is a member of the Bluecoats, a life member of AMVETS, a trustee of the local youth athletic association and he has coached youth sports forever.
